Enabling Mapping

To enable mapping you need to have GPS co-ordinates.  There are two ways of specifying these:

1.  Longitude and Latitude

The Longitude Co-ordinate is measured from the Prime Meridian (which is the longitude that runs through Greenwich, England), with positive values going east and negative values going west i.e. for New Zealand and Australia the Longitude co-ordinate is a positive value.

The Longitude co-ordinate is the higher number  i.e. 151.21528

The Latitude Co-ordinate is measured from the equator, with positive values going North and negative values going South i.e. for New Zealand and Australia the Latitude co-ordinate is a negative value.

The Latitude Co-ordinate is the smaller number i.e. 33.86004

Mapping Co-ordinate Formats

Coordinates can be shown in the following formats:-
Description Data Format

Example

Country Longitude Latitude
DMS - Degrees, Minutes and Seconds DD MMM SSS

Australia

New Zealand

151 12 55.01

174 45 47.61

-33 51 36.16

-36 5 7.63

DDM - Degrees and Decimal Minutes DD.MMMM

Australia

New Zealand

15112.9168

17445.7935

-33 51.6026

-36 5.1271

DD - Decimal Degrees DD.DDDDD

Australia

New Zealand

151.2153

174.7632

-33.86004

-36.08545

2.  'Eastings' and 'Northings'

Here, a specific point in the ocean has been chosen as a starting point.  Co-ordinates are calculated in metres relative to this point.  This numbers end up quite large because of this...

For example:  2658597.96, 5988734.70

How do I get the co-ordinates into the system?

There are three ways of doing this:

  1. Go into Site Details.  Click on the ' ... ' button next to the GPS co-ordinate box and enter the address.  When you click Go SIGNZ will look up the address and retrieve a map with the address marked by a teardrop.  If you are not 100% happy with the positioning of he tear drop you can click the spot you want it to move to, or alternatively drag and drop the tear drop to the right spot.  When you are happy, click save.

Note: this only works if you are set up for Google Maps, not ZoomIn...

  2. You can use a handheld device to pick up the co-ordinates while standing at the physical site.  This can be exported to excel and then imported into SIGNZ.

  3. You can also use ZoomIn Maps via the SIGNZ website.  Click here to start it.

Note:  This does not automatically save to the SIGNZ database as it is simply a webpage.  Take note of the co-ordinates.

Where can I use my maps?

  • Sites screen:          select site(s) - see here for more info on multiselect - then the 'map' button and select map type.
  • Avails screen:        select site(s), click the 'map' button and select map type
  • Proposals screen: select site(s), click the 'map' button and select map type
  • Contracts screen:  select the 'map' button and maps from all sites listed in the contract will show up.
